How often will my child attend classes

Classes are once per week

How long are the lessons

Most group lessons are 45 minutes long; private lessons are typically 30 minutes long

Does my child need to practice at home?

Our rule for practising is “we only practise on the days we eat!” For beginners, this can start with as little as five minutes a day (older children can cope with more). Younger children often need more encouragement and assistance, so please help them sit at the piano, and sing with them while they practice.

Set a regular schedule for practice, so it becomes part of your weekly routine! Practice should be fun; sometimes it may just be singing the words and doing actions for a song. You can play the music tracks in the car on the way to school and get your child to do ‘air pianos’ in the backseat while singing the notes. Putting on mini-concerts for family and friends is also a great way to have fun with their learning!

Do we need a keyboard or piano at home to practice on?

Yes, otherwise it would be like trying to learn to swim while only staying on dry land!

Is it better to have a piano or a keyboard?

Beginner students are encouraged to learn by ear (much like we learn language through the ear before we read), so as long as the instrument is in-tune it will not matter if it is a keyboard or a piano. We prefer electronic keyboards or digital pianos as we can be assured they have the correct pitch and tuning for the student. As an added bonus – they have volume buttons!

Do I need to attend the lessons?

Where your child is under 5 years of age, yes, you are required to attend, however for younger and new students, we strongly encourage you to attend classes so you gain an understanding of what is being learnt in the music class and are able to best assist your child in their learning at home.

Parents are always welcome to sit in class, regardless of the age of the student.

Can I bring other children to my child’s class?

Due to the nature of group lessons, we are unable to accomodate siblings in Pianorama classes.

It is absolutely ok to bring siblings to our Jitterbugs and Beeboppers lessons.

Your course seems to teach piano by ear? Will my child learn to read music?

Our program is designed to teach music the same way we learn language —music is, after all, a universal language! Our programs follows the progression of “hear – sing – play – read – write”. Junior program students (4-6 yrs) start learning through the ear, and we gently build up their reading skills with note-reading exercises. Realistically, most children begin to read the music stave at around six or seven years of age. At that level, our Junior students are already playing piano well! We gradually encourage students to utilise more note-reading skills through our Intermediate course. Older beginners (7 yrs and over) are introduced to note reading immediately during piano lessons.
